The general purpose of the Planning Board is to guide the orderly growth and development of the community. The purpose of these administrative duties is to ensure the public safety, interest and welfare of the residents of the town within the Planning Boards functional areas as mandates by statutes, local laws, and regulations. Membership on the Planning Board is open to full-time and part-time residents.

The Appearance Commission currently focuses on maintaining our barrier island maritime forest while balancing property owners' rights and needs for development and land usage. The commission conducts site visits for tree removal and new lot development. adhering to ordinances and tree densities. Periodically, the commission approves signage for commercial sites to maintain our low-key beach town appearance. Membership on the Appearance Commission is open to full-time residents only.

The Board of Adjustment hears requests for variances from the town's zoning ordinance and appeals from enforcement decisions and serves in a quasi-judicial capacity. Membership on the Board of Adjustment is open to full-time residents only.

Strategic Planning is one of the most important tools that a municipality can use to bring together residents, the Board of Commissioners and municipal staff in the development of a common vision, direction and goals for the community. The Strategic Planning Committee is responsible for developing, modifying, and evaluating strategic goals objectives for the town. Membership on the Strategic Planning Committee is open to full-time and part-time residents.

The Parks and Recreation Committe advises and makes recommendations for all recreational activities (based on community surveys) and periodically revises the towns' parks and recreation plan. In addition, the committee plans annual calendars of recreational events and related event details. Membership on the Parks and Recreation Committee is open to full-time and part-time residents.

The History Committee preserves significant documents, event records, themes and ideas on the History of Pine Knoll Shores and provides a means for the public to study, appreciate and view local history in order to advance public awareness of the town's heritage. Membership on the History Committee is open to full-time and part-time residents.
